👋 Getting started
Voxlist is a to-do and shopping list app you can speak to. Make a list, tap the mic and say what you need. Voxlist sorts each thing you say into the right day, time or shop section.
- Tap New List and say (or type) a name.
- On the list, tap the mic and start talking. It keeps listening until you tap it again.
- Tap a box to tick something off.
📋 Lists
Create
Tap New List. In voice mode, say the name. In keyboard mode, type it and tap Create. New lists appear at the top and open straight away.
Icons
Voxlist picks an icon from the list's name. For example, Shopping or Tesco gets a basket, Holiday packing a suitcase and Birthday party a gift.
Rename
Inside a list, tap its icon or name (next to the ✏️). Then say or type the new name. The icon updates to match.
Delete
Tap the 🗑️ on a list's card on the home screen.
🎙️ Adding things by voice
Tap the mic on a list. It turns red, shows what it hears, and adds each phrase as a new item. Keep talking to add more, then tap the red button to stop.
Say one thing at a time and pause between them: milk … bread … call the dentist.
Voice only adds things. To tick, edit or delete, tap the screen.
📅 Days & dates
Start a phrase with a day or date to put the item in a group for that day.
| Monday drama club | A weekly Monday group. If Monday is tomorrow, it goes in Tomorrow instead. |
| today / tomorrow / yesterday | A group for that exact date |
| day after tomorrow haircut | The date two days from now |
| next Wednesday hospital | The coming Wednesday (never today) |
| last Monday dentist | The most recent Monday |
| 22nd December dentist | A specific date. December 22, on the 5th of May 2027 and short months like Sept work too. |
Groups are labelled Today, Tomorrow, a weekday for the coming week, or a date such as Mon 6 Oct. The Today group glows green.
Group controls
- Tap a group's header to fold it away or open it again.
- The header shows how many are done, e.g. 2/5.
- Tap ✕ on the header to delete the whole group.
🕐 Times
Mention a time anywhere in the phrase. Voxlist shows it as a small blue label and sorts items in a day by time.
tomorrow dentist at 4:30 · Friday swimming 6pm · Monday lunch at noon · bins at 7 o'clock
A plain hour from 1 to 7 counts as afternoon or evening: “at 4” means 4 pm. Say “am” if you mean morning.
🔁 Repeating items
Start with every and a weekday:
- every Monday drama club
- every Tuesday at 6pm swimming
- every Thursday piano until 22nd December
Repeating items live in that weekday's group and show ↻. Once the day has passed, they untick themselves ready for the next week. After an “until” date they stop resetting.
Only weekdays work. “every day” and “every week” aren't understood yet.
⌨️ Keyboard mode
Tap ⚙️ and choose Keyboard. The mic becomes a keyboard button. Tap it to open the composer.
- Pick when: Today, Tomorrow, a weekday, or 📅 Date.
- After a weekday: 🔁 Every makes it repeat (then ⏳ Until… offers 4 weeks, 8 weeks, end of month, end of year or a date). 📌 … only means just that one day.
- 🕐 Time: quick times, or “Other time…”.
- 🍳 Recipe: makes the text a dish, and suggests dishes from the recipe book as you type.
Type and tap Add. Separate several things with commas: milk, eggs, bread. Tap a chosen chip to remove it, or press backspace in the empty box.
✅ Ticking, editing & deleting
- Tick: tap the box. Ticked items move down to a ✓ Checked section at the bottom. Untick one and it goes back where it was.
- Clear completed: the red button at the bottom removes the items you've ticked.
- Edit: tap an item's text. This works for items that aren't inside a day group.
- Delete: tap the ✕ on the right.
Progress
The bar under the list name fills up as you tick things off, and fades from the list's colour to blue. Tick the very last item and you'll hear a little chime 🎉.
🛒 Shopping lists
Lists with a shopping name (like Shopping, Groceries or Tesco) are sorted into shop sections as you add to them. So are lists where most items are groceries.
🥦 Fruit & Veg · 🥩 Meat & Fish · 🧀 Dairy & Eggs · 🍞 Bakery · 🧊 Frozen · 🥫 Cupboard · 🍫 Snacks & Sweets · 🥤 Drinks · 🧽 Household · 🧴 Toiletries · 🍼 Baby · 🐾 Pet · 🛒 Other
Voxlist reads the whole name, so coconut milk goes to Cupboard, not Dairy, and ice cream goes to Frozen.
🍳 Recipes & meal planning
Add a dish
Say recipe and the dish: recipe lasagne, Monday recipe chilli, tomorrow recipe fish pie. You can also say just recipe, then say the dish name next.
Find a recipe
Voxlist looks the dish up in its recipe book straight away. When it finds one, the ✨ button turns green (✨ Found).
- Tap ✨ to see matching recipes, three at a time, and use Find 3 more for more.
- Nothing suitable? Open Or paste a recipe URL manually and paste a link from sites like BBC Good Food or AllRecipes.
- Pick a recipe to see its ingredients.
Add to shopping list
Choose Add to shopping list and pick a list. Ingredients are added with shopping-friendly names: cooking amounts like “2 tbsp” are dropped, pack sizes like “400g” are kept, and duplicates are skipped.
Cook
Tap the dish name to open the full recipe with ingredients and step-by-step method. You can tick off ingredients under the dish as you go.
📥 Importing lists from other apps
In the Android app, other apps can send lists to Voxlist:
- VL Meal Plan: tap 🛒 Send shopping list to Voxlist. Voxlist opens, or comes to the front if it's already open.
- Any other app: tap Share and choose Voxlist (or “Add to Voxlist”). Each line becomes an item. Bullets, tick boxes, numbering and headings like “Dairy:” are removed.
Voxlist asks “Add N items to…”. Tap + New list and check the name, or tap one of your lists.
- Items already on that list aren't added twice. If you'd ticked one off, it's unticked, because you need it again.
- Shopping lists sort the new items into shop sections as usual.
- Cancel or Back closes the picker without adding anything.
Voxlist can import shared text or a shared .txt file. It can't read PDFs.
↕️ Reordering
- Drag an item by its ≡ handle onto another item to move it.
- Drag an item onto an open day group to move it into that day.
- Items inside a day group can be reordered within that group.
Dragging works best on a computer; on phones it depends on the browser. In shopping lists, the section always decides where an item appears.
🔒 Your data
- Your lists are saved only on this device. There's no account or cloud sync.
- The web app keeps working offline once loaded. Looking up new recipes needs a connection.
- Android app: voice uses your phone's own speech recogniser. Allow the microphone when asked. Your lists are also backed up inside the app and come back automatically if the app's web data is cleared.
Voice recognition is set to English (US). In a web browser, voice input needs a browser that supports speech recognition, such as Chrome.
